The amount of time it takes to fill a whirlpool tub is inversely proportional to the square of the radius of the pipe used to fill it. If a pipe of radius 2.5 inches can fill the tub in 8 minutes, how long will it take the tub to fill if a pipe of radius 3.5 inches is used? How many inches would the tub fill approximately in minutes?

Inverse variation is of the form y=kx, we are given the point (2.5, 8) so we can solve for k, the constant of variation...

8=2.5k  divide both sides by 2.5

3.2=k so the equation is:

y=3.2x, when x=3.5 you have

y=3.2(5)

y=16 minutes.
