The Underground Railroad was a chain of safe houses and routes that were used to transport runaway slaves out of the South.  They also utilized codes to conceal what they were doing.  Many of these people were from the abolitionist’s movement who helped fugitives escape from slavery.  They would travel on foot, boat or train and would stop at barns, churches and other places to rests.  Despite the danger, many risked their lives to be free and spread the word of the cruelty of slavery.
