can you help me reply to this discussion: Daniel Batson developed an empathy-altruism hypothesis which states that if you perceive someone in need and imagine how they are feeling, you are likely to experience other similar feelings of empathic concern, which cause the altruistic motive to help and reduce the other persons distress (Kassin et al., 2023). Batson believed that if you are truly focused on how the other person feels, true altruism is possible (Kassin et al., 2023). Batson also came up with a way to support this hypothesis by sharing his explanation that when a person’s motive is egoistic, the help they provide should decline if it is easy for them to escape from the situation, and escape from their own feelings of distress, while if a persons motive is altruistic, they will help no matter the ease of escape (Kassin et al., 2023).
